Better by design

We take an innovative approach to how certain critical illnesses are covered to help provide support when it’s needed most.

If one of your client’s employees suffered a covered critical illness:

  • How much support would they need right away for a more severe covered condition?
  • What if their covered condition goes into remission and then returns and progresses years later?

Serious questions. The progression and severity features – along with a recurrence benefit – on MassMutual's Group Critical Illness (CI) insurance might have some answers.

See below for how these work to help support a critical illness journey. Our Group CI pays a lump sum benefit upon a diagnosis of a covered critical illness that can be used to pay for out-of-pocket medical costs or any other expense.

Here are hypothetical examples:

The Severity Feature

Icon of hand holding a dollar sign
Joe owns a $10,000 CI certificate.

He is diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. The severity feature1 could be there to help him.

How it works: Because he has been diagnosed with an advanced stage of the disease, he is eligible for 200% of the certificate benefit.

Stage 1 or 2$10,000
Stage 3$5,000
Stage 4 diagnosed$5,000

200% equals a $20,000 benefit on a $10,000 certificate paid directly to him that he can use any way he chooses.

The Progression Feature and Recurrence Benefit

Jennifer owns a $10,000 CI certificate.

She is diagnosed with Stage 2 cancer at the start of her cancer journey.

How it works: Because she owns a $10,000 CI certificate, the progression feature2 continues to support her as her disease progresses, goes into remission, and then recurs3.

Stage 1 or 2 cancer diagnosis$10,000
Progresses to Stage 3 cancer$5,000
Cancer goes into remission
Stage 3 cancer returns3$15,000
Progresses to Stage 4 cancer$5,000

Jennifer is eligible for a $35,000 payout from her $10,000 certificate (350%). The money is payable directly to her to use any way she chooses.

1 If included in the plan design

2 If included in the plan design, if a covered condition progresses, a progression feature allows for payment of the difference between the full benefit amount for that covered condition and previously paid amount for the early stage diagnosis.
