Economic uncertainty shaped much of 2025, creating headwinds that affected the financial well-being of many working Americans. Higher costs of living stretched budgets, and interest rates remained elevated, making everything from groceries to housing more expensive. At the same time, an evolving AI-driven job market and escalating geopolitical tensions created additional pressures and unknowns.

Yet, through all of these challenges, our research reveals a fundamental constant: the need for protection among working Americans1 hasn't wavered. Across our quarterly Workforce Financial Stability Score survey and reports, employee benefits, including healthcare coverage, financial protection, and support for overall wellness, remain essential priorities, regardless of whether workers feel Financially Challenged, Financially Stable, or Financially Healthy.2

Our latest report, Q2 2025 The pathway to voluntary benefits success, tells the year’s story clearly. Even as the overall Workforce Financial Stability Score remained steady year over year, the number of workers saying that external pressures, including politics and stock market concerns, affect how they feel about their financial well-being increased by 10 points compared to May 2024. In addition, confidence levels in the ability to manage finances between paychecks decreased among all employee segments, hitting a record low for Financially Challenged workers.

Traditional benefits through the workplace can provide essential pillars of financial well-being for the American workforce. But, rising healthcare costs and the resulting shift to high-deductible health plans put significant pressure on household budgets, especially when unexpected expenses hit.

Supplemental health benefits step up

In many ways, supplemental health benefits, such as group accident insurance and group critical illness insurance, are made for the challenging environment that employees and employers find themselves facing as we head into 2026. That’s one of the reasons MassMutual Worksite expanded our portfolio of solutions by launching our Group Accident Insurance and Group Critical Illness Insurance products in 2025.

For workers, these benefits help reduce the gaps that come with higher health insurance deductibles and living paycheck to paycheck. For employers, they offer a way to provide in-the-moment support and care by relieving some of the financial pressure as employees navigate accidents and illness.

Overall, according to our research, 59% of workers view voluntary benefits as essential to their financial well-being. In June 2025, 18% reported starting or increasing their enrollment in voluntary benefits, up from 12% in June 2024. Still, as we dive deeper into the data around group accident, group critical illness, and hospital indemnity insurance, we see a widening disparity between the Financially Healthy employee segment and the Financially Challenged.

Among those in the Financially Healthy segment, 71% see their voluntary benefits as essential to their financial well-being. However, the percentage drops significantly for employees in the Financially Stable (55%) and Financially Challenged (50%) segments. Perceived value is a primary reason driving the difference, indicating the need for increased education to boost awareness and understanding of how the benefits work and the important financial safety net they can provide.

The opportunity ahead

As an industry, we have a powerful opportunity to turn these insights into action and build increased understanding of how voluntary and supplemental health benefits can enhance the financial well-being of working Americans.

At MassMutual Worksite, we’re proud to be part of the solution by offering next-generation supplemental health solutions that are thoughtfully designed to meet distinctly modern challenges, including:

Our Worksite portfolio also includes our Group Whole Life Insurance with guaranteed death benefits, guaranteed level premiums, and guaranteed cash value increases over time. The product’s built-in Chronic Care Benefit3 can help to enhance financial well-being by enabling certificate holders to receive an advance or acceleration of a portion of the death benefit if the insured has a qualified chronic illness4.

However, as our research tells us, the impact of these solutions relies on employee understanding and use. Trusted producers are vital to unlocking that understanding and, ultimately, the full value of the benefits.

The challenges of 2025 underscored the pivotal role benefits producers play in helping employers deliver meaningful coverage and building employee confidence that the protection addresses their challenges. We’re grateful for their shared commitment to the welfare of working Americans – and look forward with optimism to what we can accomplish together.

1 The MassMutual Workforce Financial Stability Score measures the changing attitudes and financial outlook of working Americans. Commissioned by MassMutual, the research began in June 2022 and is conducted online, monthly, among a nationally representative sample of 1,000 U.S. middle-market employees. For purposes of this research, MassMutual defines working Americans and middle-market employees between ages 22 and 67, working at firms with at least 25 benefit-eligible employees, with a household income of $40,000 to less than $150,000, and assets less than $300,000.

2 Working Americans are segmented into three cohorts based on the WFSS, using a scale from 0 to 100 to indicate the overall sentiments of financial well-being: Financially Challenged - survey respondents who scored between 0 and 39, Financially Stable - survey respondents who scored between 40 and 69, and Financially Healthy – survey respondents who scored between 70 and 100.

3 Riders and other features, such as the Chronic Care Benefit provision under the certificate, may be available for an additional premium or have a fee when exercised. Availability of these features may be limited based on issue age or state of issue. The Chronic Care Benefit is not approved in MA.

4 Accessing the cash value and/or an acceleration of the death benefit will reduce the certificate's death benefit, any cash value and any loan values. If the Chronic Care Benefit has been exercised, the certificate's premium payments will then be based on the reduced amount of insurance at the current rate.
